What Is Web
Conferencing?
Web conferencing is an
entirely new medium for sharing information with the
people you work with. With Web conferencing you can
now conduct live interactive meetings or presentations
with anyone, located anywhere, using only a Web
browser and a phone.
A Web conference is simply
the combination of a phone call with live web-based
visuals and interaction. To make a presentation:

- Upload your PowerPoint®
presentation to a private website
- Point your meeting
participants to the URL where the information is
Web conferencing also provides you
with benefits:
- An incredible amount of
control
- Rich media options
- Interactive tools to help
augment the conference call
Web conferencing is unique because
most visual content that you can present in-person you can
present using Web conferencing. Business professionals can use a
wide variety of rich visual content to get their message across
while actively engaging their audience and receiving real-time
feedback with live interaction. There are many types of rich
content you can present:
- PowerPoint® slides delivered
in real-time
- annotation tools
- live software demonstrations
- polling
- whiteboards
- web tours
- streaming audio and video
As a presenter, you're given full
control of the meeting. You control content, but can also
control the level of the participant's interactivity during a
presentation:
- to ask text-based questions
- review slides
- chat
- indicate their
"mood" through a seating chart
In smaller collaborative meetings
oriented towards workgroups who need to closely collaborate over
a document or idea, even more interactivity is possible:
- creating new content on the
fly
- illustrating points
collaboratively on whiteboards
The benefits of Web conferencing are
clear:
- serve as a valuable visual
supplement to an audio conference call
- can sometimes replace the need
for travel to an in-person meeting or presentation
Audio conference calls today
frequently include a visual complement. Slides or meeting
documents are often faxed or emailed prior to the event and are
a subject of discussion during the meeting. This approach has
its practical limitations, however, since documents are often
lost or misplaced in transit, or not available to everyone. It
is also challenging to keep everyone in sync with a
presentation:
- some may skip ahead
- some may fall behind
- some slides may require
thoughtful explanation and illustration, which can prove to
be very difficult
